Six Headlands, Three Winters

Interview by Hanna Oyelaran · 12 August 2026

There is a particular kind of patience that only shows up in pictures made over years rather than weeks. Tobias Lindqvist has been driving the same ninety minutes north out of Gothenburg since the winter of 2022, parking in the same three places, and walking out to the same six headlands.

He does not describe this as a project so much as a habit. "The first year I was looking for a photograph," he says. "By the second year I was looking for weather. That is a different job."

If you go somewhere once, you photograph what it looks like. If you go back twenty times, you photograph what it is like.

Working slowly on purpose

Lindqvist shoots a Mamiya 7 and rarely exposes more than a roll in a day. The constraint is deliberate: ten frames is enough to force a decision about which of the six headlands is worth walking to, and the walk itself is where most of the editing happens.

He prints everything himself, in a converted utility room, and admits that the darkroom is what keeps the pictures honest. "You cannot hide a boring photograph in the enlarger," he says. "You just spend two hours confirming it."

On curation

Asked why he publishes to a curated platform rather than a feed, his answer is unsentimental. A feed rewards him for posting weekly. The coast does not work weekly. "I would rather show four pictures a year to people who look at them for longer than a second."
